Yeah Yeah Yeah…. another Winter Hiking Blog…. You love it stop frontin!

Winter is the least forgiving season to have something go wrong in. Like wise it is also the worst season to just get up and go into the trails with a piece of kit that you have never tested.

I know… I did it and I paid the price for it. I’ll never go out in the winter without fully knowing what my gear can do for me and what limitations it has EVER again. Read the rest of this entry »

Ok you filthy animals. Let’s talk tarps. Over the past 3 years I’ve been cycling through a series of tarps ranging from different sizes to different materials looking for that ONE tarp to rule them all. Well I haven’t exactly found that ONE tarp but I have zeroed in on what I need for 3 season and winter season.

Now I will stress that a tarp is a mere personal choice based on exactly what YOU are looking for as far as coverage, weight and price. This is just my personal preferences and my Pros and Cons of each that I have noticed: Read the rest of this entry »

Ok you experienced hikers…. You may want to pass on reading most of this as this section is really geared toward noobs.

Wait… why you still reading? Oh you’re a noob, well welcome to the ever changing madness of choosing your food for hiking.

I’m going to start by writing I do NOT have all this food business dialed in. And to be honest I don’t think I ever will because I’m always trying new things. BUT I believe I have this figured out enough to provide you with some solid guidance on how to choose your meals.

Now to choose your meals lets break this down into 3 categories:

1) Weight of food
2) Calorie In-take/Nutrition
3) Variety Read the rest of this entry »

Well I really didn’t expect to receive such a good response to my winter hiking and hammocking blog. But I’ve received a few emails about my gear list for the winter and I really wanted to clarify a few things for the winter noobs starting out. My gangsta ass had a lot of error and twice as many trials before I attempted an overnight winter hike/hammock hang. Here’s a few thoughts on my gear failures: Read the rest of this entry »

Wiggity Water Monkey in the house yet again peeps!!! This time I’d like to discuss Winter Hiking/Camping and how it relates to hammocking.

This aqua-simian has many thoughts on the matter since I’ve been winter hiking for 2 solid winters so I will do my best to categorize my thoughts and keep it in a way which is less of a ramble and more of a “best practices”. Now I said do my best… I won’t guarantee anything! OOOK OOOK Playa. Read the rest of this entry »

OK like I said in my intro video I’m going to have video trips on my blog. Why not have my entire section hike of the NY Appalachian Trail. In this you will actually see a huge transition from lightweight backpacking to Ultralight Backpacking as well as a push to do longer distances each day. Read the rest of this entry »

The Lightest Hammock Set Up?

Posted: September 8, 2011 in Hammock Camping

So I was approached to do a blog about the “lightest” hammock set up from a hammockforum member deGuerre. I have to say the Monkey is a bit apprehensive about this. Why? Well first I have a biological advantage in this hammock world than most people. I’m short… Like really short.

How short am I?

Some short jokes from my friends:

I’m so short I can play handball off a curb
I’m so short Oompa Loompas look down to talk to me
I’m so short I have to reach up to tie my shoes
I’ve even been called a “Brownie” from the movie WILLOW…. Stupid Dikinies! Read the rest of this entry »

Is a Hammock a shelter?

Posted: September 1, 2011 in Hammock Camping

So as I sit in my hotel room bored out of my mind after doing accounting work I find myself reading hiking forums and as it turns out I find something worth evaluating a bit deeper…. Yes another hammock blog. You’ve been warned if you hate hammocks stop reading now and save yourself.

What, you still reading?

OK so there’s a debate that I seem to find myself in…. is a hammock a shelter at all? OR is the Tarp the shelter? If you paid careful attention to my previous blog about Tent-Hammock weight you will know my stance on the subject. But I’ll elaborate for ya. Read the rest of this entry »
